Jonathan Cohen is an industry recognised energy solicitor specialising in renewables and low carbon energy transactions. He is Head of the Energy team at Howard Kennedy.

Jonathan advises utilities, project developers, large industrial consumers, property developers, funders, sponsors, and energy services companies (ESCOs) on energy-related transactions both in the UK and internationally.

He works with clients across all technologies including energy storage, offshore and onshore wind, solar photovoltaics, combined heat and power, district heating, geothermal, tidal, as well as, traditional power generation. 

Recent work
  • Advised an iconic 2000MW coal-fired power station in East Yorkshire, UK on its electricity connection arrangements and future development plans.
  • Advised a utility-scale US developer on its portfolio of energy storage assets in the UK.
  • Currently advising an Asian Government on the restructuring of its energy regulatory framework.
  • Advised a joint venture partnership on the London Olympics district heating and cooling scheme serving The International Quarter, Stratford.
  • Advised a multinational equity investor on their investment in the 20MW geothermal power plant in the Corbetti caldera of Ethiopia.
  • Drafted the first energy storage power purchase agreement (PPA) in the UK for the offtaker Good Energy.
  • Advised a Chinese state-sponsored developer, on the purchase of three wind farms from EDF Energy and the renegotiation of the power purchase agreements (PPAs).
  • Advising on the £5.8bn sale of EDF Energy plc’s electricity distribution networks business to UK Power Networks part of the Cheung Kong Infrastructure group.
  • Acting for a US hedge fund on the acquisition of the then largest offshore wind farm in the UK, the 100 wind turbine, 300MW Thanet wind farm including advising on the refinancing and the subsequent sale to Vattenfall AB.
