He helps clients to work through contractual disputes and defamation, privacy, and intellectual property infringement issues in particular.
He understands that his clients want to be looking forward – producing ground-breaking films, writing world class journalism, developing innovative technology – and don’t want to be overly distracted by disputes. As a result, Matthew does everything he can to carry the burden.
Matthew works hard to help clients resolve their disputes quickly. Where a quick resolution is not possible though, Matthew has guided several clients through court proceedings and to trial.
Matthew advises clients in respect of proceedings before every level of court in England and Wales, as well as arbitrations.
- Acted for Associated Newspapers in defence of a libel claim brought by Sir James Dyson.
- Acted for Associated Newspapers in defence of a libel claim brought by Steve Morgan CBE.
- Acted for News Group Newspapers in relation to claims arising from phone hacking at News of the World.
- Acted for Mister Smith Entertainment in defence of a contractual claim relating to an alleged film finance agreement.
- Acted for Larkhark Films, a company managed by the Ingenious Group, in a dispute with its insurer, European Film Bonds, relating to a film completion guarantee.
- Acted for Twentieth Century Fox in a claim for infringement of its intellectual property rights in The Greatest Showman.
- Acted for Flutter Entertainment in defence of a claim for return of alleged stolen monies.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Matthew worked as an extra on films & TV programmes including Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, and Downton Abbey.
