James Ashwin:

Solicitor (New Zealand Qualified)

James joined the Construction Department at Howard Kennedy in December 2016 as a solicitor (qualified in New Zealand and Australia).  Prior to joining Howard Kennedy he worked as a solicitor in the commercial property department at Russell McVeagh, a premier full service firm from New Zealand. 

James has been involved in major domestic and international transactions ranging from asset finance projects, mergers and acquisitions, international public offerings, complex commercial developments , subdivisions, and conveyancing. 

James is now working with the construction team on a wide range of development projects, financing projects and litigation.

Recent work

  • Advised a supermarket chain on a number of mixed use developments throughout New Zealand
  • Advised a private developer in respect of a substantial residential development valued at over $100m NZD
  • Advised a major oil company on its obligations, requirements and compliance under new health and safety legistlation
  • Advised a Chinese Investor in the due diligence and acquisition of a rubbish disposal company (valued at approximately $500m NZD)
  • Advised a mining company in the divestment of its US$101m portfolio
  • Advised an electricity provider on a range of day to day legal matters including acquisition of land and construction of electrical towers
  • Advised a property investment company on the acquisition, redevelopment and leaseback of a historically protected site.

Random fact

James has been a drum and bass DJ for the past 8 years.
