A team of Howard Kennedy's first year trainees were announced as winners of the Legal Talent Competition at the First Hundred Years Inspirational Women in Law Awards on Thursday 29 November as part of the LegalWeek Connect Conference 2018.

Following an application process, the Howard Kennedy team was shortlisted to present their idea at the LegalWeek Connect Conference in County Hall, alongside fellow finalists of associates from Quinn Emmanuel and Milbank. The event was very well attended with a gathering of in-house counsel, law firm partners, legal professionals and more to discuss the hot topics of 2018: collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and talent.

In the form of a "Dragon's Den" style pitch, the team presented their idea, an app called ASPIRE LEGAL, and navigated through a round of testing questioning from the four judge panel, comprised of Jeremy Barton (GC at KPMG UK), Andrew Garard (Group Legal Director and Company Secretary at ITV), Siobhan Moriarty (GC and Company Secretary at Diageo) and John Malpas (Publishing Director at LegalWeek).

The question: How can the legal profession change to better manage diversity, inclusivity and talent for future business success?

The answer: To tackle the issue of the lack of diversity and inclusion in law, the team proposed an app, called ASPIRE LEGAL, for use on smart phones targeting 15-18 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds that will engage their interest in law and highlight the skills required to pursue a legal career.

Congratulations to the team made up of Charlotte Colthurst, Josh Page, Charlotte Towerton and Jessica Rush. As the winners, the team receive £2000 cash prize, a write up in Legal Week and a years free subscription to all ALM Brands.
