US court confirms that elephants are not people

A US court has ruled on this jumbo-sized issue and, in reaching its decision, stampeded over habeas corpus arguments made. Puns aside, the decision will come as a blow to animal rights campaigners. The case was brought as part of an animal rights group's attempt to free five elephants from a Colorado zoo. The bid was rejected after the state's Supreme Court ruled that elephants are not legally considered people and, therefore, cannot challenge their detention through habeas corpus.
