I was a paralegal for a year and a half in the Residential Development team here at Howard Kennedy. I worked for numerous clients on transactions from the initial development launches right through to completion. I spent time in Kuala Lumpur working for our Malaysian client at the launch of one of their high profile developments. This all gave me vital skills in dealing with clients, learning how large scale transactions take place and developing commercial awareness.
Once I had secured my training contract, I spent eight months travelling around Central and South America throwing myself completely out of my comfort zone. Highlights include boarding down an active volcano in Nicaragua and swimming with sharks in Panama.
In my first month I was invited to a client networking event. It was a big challenge as there were prominent figures in their field attending, and I was worried that I did not know enough about the sector to properly engage with them. However, by the end of it, I had learnt a lot about who our clients are and what they do. It gave me confidence for dealing with them in the future.
Watching anything live – whether that is live music, a comedy show, or a play. The venue can be anything from my local pub to Wembley Stadium.
I also enjoy anything that is as far removed from being sat at a desk as possible. I took part in the extreme 13 mile obstacle course called Tough Mudder last year, and despite being electrocuted and fully submerged in an ice tank, I am currently training (mostly eating) for next years event.
Get experience outside of the office, whether that's in sport, volunteering or a wacky hobby. Showing an interest in and dedication to something that not every other applicant does, will make you stand out from the crowd.
