What non fee-earning activities are you looking to get involved in at Howard Kennedy?

I've already got involved in various BD initiatives, including representing the firm at a sustainable real estate conference, volunteering at a media litigation event, and attending networking events for the Private Wealth sector group. On wellbeing, I've gone to the firm's yoga classes. These are taught by Liz Morley, a partner in Media Litigation.

This year, I'm looking to get involved in shadowing volunteers for Toynbee Hall and organising trainee socials with the Social Committee.

Top tip for agile working?

We're lucky that we have a lot of flexibility over when we come into the office. If you can, co-ordinating your days in the office with your colleagues is really helpful. You learn so much by overhearing conversations and it's important to build relationships with your team.

Why did you choose Howard Kennedy for your training contract?

People, culture, practice.

I got my placement on my second application to HK. The main reason for my reapplication was my interactions with the HR team, the other trainees, associates, and partners. Everyone was so friendly and supportive throughout the entire process. I've now experienced that first-hand since I started my TC.

Top tip for agile working?

I find a morning routine and a to-do list gets me on the right track.

Why did you choose Howard Kennedy for your training contract?

I worked my way up from legal assistant to senior paralegal at Howard Kennedy before  starting my training contract. So, I knew that the firm was a good fit for me. I've made incredible memories and met such inspirational people along the way. I'm excited to continue my journey here.

What non fee-earning activities are you looking to get involved in at Howard Kennedy?

I am currently part of the Inclusion Committee, but I'd also love to join the Environment Committee at some stage.

Top tip for agile working?

Having a designated work space which you can pack away/close the door on at the end of the day.

Why did you choose Howard Kennedy for your training contract?

The culture. Howard Kennedy really cares about its employees and encourages people to be themselves. All of my colleagues are friendly and helpful. The training contract reflects this with the level of support we get. On top of a trainee supervisor, we are assigned mentors, trainee buddies and trainee 'champions' - all of whom are there to support us throughout the training. I knew I'd be supported at Howard Kennedy from the start of my training contract to qualification and beyond.

Top tip for agile working?

Put your phone on silent and keep it on the other side of the room.

What skills do you think will be most important for your training contract?

Our training contract is varied and so many different skills are needed. If I had to pick the top three, it would be relationship building, resilience and flexibility.

The best thing about the firm is the people. I know everyone says that, but I completely agree. Some of the seats also have a lot of client contact from the outset. That's why building relationships is so important.

Given the variety of work in the training contract, I think resilience is vital. Some days might be tough. A landmark case that is difficult to understand could come out. You could have a client meeting for the first time. There will be challenges. If you have the ability to meet these head on, you will get the most out of the training contract.

So, being flexible is important to get the most out of each seat. Roll with the punches - as the saying goes!

Keep in touch with colleagues when working from home. It's important to stay connected. It keeps me on track with work and helps me blow off steam!

Why did you choose Howard Kennedy for your training contract?

Howard Kennedy's emphasis on community and charity were the main stand-out factors for me when applying for training contracts. I was particularly excited to see that Centrepoint had been chosen as the firm’s partner charity in 2020 as this is a charity I have supported and worked with for many years. Charity and social impact are fundamental and extremely important to me and it is evident Howard Kennedy shares these same values through their continued work on social impact.

I attended an insight evening session at Howard Kennedy. This gave me an insight into the day-to-day running and culture at the firm. I truly believe that Howard Kennedy strongly exudes the importance of the celebration of individuality and personality. I was mentored by a solicitor in the Family team who demonstrated the 'Be Yourself' value, and this further attracted me to the firm.

Top tip for those who are working remotely for the first time

My top tip would be to have a designated working area. I believe the best practice is to get ready every morning as if you were going into the office. This definitely aids motivation and productivity.

Why did you choose Howard Kennedy for your training contract?

It might sound like a cliché, but the culture. Before applying, I approached some of the current trainees. They would always praise the inclusive and welcoming culture at the firm. Since starting here, it's clear how true that is. I have not yet met a person (including partners!) that has not been approachable or keen to chat with you.

Top tip for agile working?

Asking questions! It can feel daunting as a trainee to seek advice when you're not sure about something, especially when you are working from home and can't ask people in person. But don't feel shy to give people a quick call, or a drop them a Teams message - everyone is always so happy to help!
