About

Jonathan Cohen is an industry recognised energy solicitor specialising in renewables and low carbon energy transactions. He is Head of the Energy team at Howard Kennedy.

Jonathan advises utilities, project developers, large industrial consumers, property developers, funders, sponsors and energy services companies (ESCOs) on energy-related transactions both in the UK and internationally.

He works with clients across all technologies including energy storage, offshore and onshore wind, solar photovoltaics, combined heat and power, district heating and cooling, electric vehicles, geothermal, tidal, as well as, traditional power generation. 

Recent work
  • Advised the iconic 2000MW Eggborough coal-fired power station in East Yorkshire, UK on its electricity connection arrangements, decommissioning and future development plans.
  • Advised on numerous energy storage projects, including drafting the first energy storage power purchase agreement (PPA) in the UK for the offtaker Good Energy.
  • Advising on the district heating and cooling scheme at the Battersea Power Station development.
  • Advised an Asian Government on the restructuring of its energy regulatory framework.
  • Advising a large African steel manufacturer on its on-site captive solar PV solution.
  • Advised ECO-World Ballymore on its district energy scheme at Embassy Gardens.
  • Advised a multinational equity investor on its investment in the 20MW geothermal power plant in the Corbetti caldera of Ethiopia.
  • Advising numerous data centre owners and operators on their energy solutions and structures.
  • Advised numerous decentralised energy projects on their regulatory requirements, offtake arrangements, including PPAs, private wire structures and direct supply models and the 'bankability' of such projects.
