Film Review: On the basis of sex

On Wednesday 6 March we were joined by clients and contacts for a private screening of the film.

It's the true story Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her historic career as she fought for equal rights which lead to her to becoming the second woman ever to be appointed US Supreme Court justice. Here are some of our reviews...

Ruth Bader Ginsburg. US Supreme Court Justice, civil rights champion, icon and now the subject of Hollywood film 'On the Basis of Sex' starring Felicity Jones.

The film tells the story of RBG's life in the period from her first day at Harvard Law School in 1956 to her appearance, with her co-counsel, husband Marty, before the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit to argue the case of Moritz v Commissioner in 1972.

Whilst Moritz was essentially a tax case, it is the gender discrimination aspects of the case which form the focus for the film and its tribute to Justice Ginsburg and her continued fight to bring an end to gender discrimination.

The film provides an indication of the drive and determination needed for women to succeed in a profession which was, at that time, so heavily dominated by men. Since then, RBG's career has of course flourished and she was appointed as the second female justice in the US Supreme Court in 1993, where she continues to sit.

Whilst the film only really offers a small glimpse into Justice Ginsburg's many incredible career achievements, you cannot help but leave the cinema feeling inspired by it, and completely inspired by her.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg's character in the film On the Basis of Sex continually reinforces the importance of "awareness" and "responsiveness" in society. She challenged the system where she saw inequality and used her expertise and passion to make a change. She took an opportunity with what turned out to be a groundbreaking tax case that paved the way for equality in the courtroom on the basis of gender discrimination.

What does it mean to be a female working in the legal industry today? In my experience, I have been exposed to opportunities that are there for the taking. I am surrounded by incredible women who inspire me daily. This includes the qualified solicitors, partners as well as business services, PAs and secretaries who are often seen as the foundation of a law firm. These women are not only passionate about the work they do, but they have confidence in their ability and are responsive to what's going on around them.

I believe there is still some education in respect of women's rights and gender discrimination. To ensure a strong and equal future for all women in the legal profession we must look back in history. The film depicts how Ruth Bader Ginsberg was instrumental in setting the first precedent that has triggered the progression we have seen over the past decades. It is a milestone we cannot ignore and something I feel proud to celebrate.
